About the CILS
The Centre for Islamic Law and Society (CILS) commenced activities in 2005. Located in the Melbourne Law School, the CILS has an extensive research and events program on issues related to Islam, Islamic laws and Islamic societies.
Given global events over the last few years, Islam and Islamic studies have received renewed attention. The Centre therefore aims to facilitate and support Islam-related research and education projects across the University, particularly those related to contemporary Islamic legal issues. The Centre takes a ‘law in context' approach to these issues and aims to improve Australian understandings of Islam and Islamic Law, both within the University and throughout the wider community.
The Director of the Centre is Professor Tim Lindsey, who is also Professor of Asian Law and Director of the Asian Law Centre in the Melbourne Law School.
