Welcome
Welcome to the website of the Centre for Islamic Law and Society (CILS)!
This website is intended as a resource for scholars, practitioners and the general community who are interested in contemporary Islamic legal issues.
Introduction to the Centre for Islamic Law and Society
The Centre for Islamic Law and Society (CILS) commenced activities in 2005.
Located in the Melbourne Law School, the CILS aims to facilitate and support Islam-related research and education projects across the University, particularly those related to contemporary Islamic legal issues. The Centre takes a ‘law in context' approach to these issues and aims to improve Australian understandings of Islam and Islamic Law, both within the University and throughout the wider community.
Seminars and Conferences
The CILS organises regular activities, including an annual international postgraduate conference and public seminars. It also regularly hosts visits by renowned international scholars and publishes a Briefing Paper Series.
Research
The CILS is associated with a number of research projects on various topics relating to Islamic law.
Asian Law Centre
The CILS works closely with the Asian Law Centre (ALC). The ALC commenced activities in 1985 and is the first and largest Australian centre devoted to the development of our understanding of Asian law and legal systems. Recent initiatives have also aimed to promote Asian interest in Australian legal systems and law.
If you have any queries about any of the activities or research of the CILS, please do not hesitate to contact us.
